A Decade of Movies

Everyone is putting out their ‘movies of the decade’ lists in the past few weeks.  I enjoy looking through them and counting up which movies I haven’t seen, and which I have never even heard of.  Well, in checking out those lists, one thing led to another and pretty soon I had spent too much time at Wikipedia, tabulating all the movies released in the last 10 years that I have seen.

All told, I ended up with exactly 365 movies, which was kind of weird.  That means almost exactly one every 10 days over the last 10 years. I briefly thought about doing a daily feature for a year (let’s be serious it would last about a month or two and I’d stop), but instead I will just pick my favorites from the decade and list them here.

  1. For those who have scoured the above list and can’t believe I haven’t seen ______, here’s my current “10 to watch” list (I think most are from the last decade). If you have additions, by all means drop them in the comments.

    Children of Men
    City of God
    Departures (Okuribito)
    History of Violence
    Primer
    The Road
    Shaun of the Dead
    A Serious Man
    Sin Nombre
    Waltz with Bashir

    • That’s why I had to add Little Miss Sunshine in the second group – to balance everything out.

  2. That’s an impressive list, Mak. Both in number, and in that your favorites contain several of my own.

My movie watching has dropped off precipitously since my salad days. It wasn’t unusual for me to watch 5 movies a week during the 90’s and early 00’s. Hell, I used to do two or three a night a couple times a month. I think I watched less than 20 in 2009. Hmmm.

In no particular order, the movies that I dug during the decade:

    Lost in Translation
    The Royal Tenenbaums
    Children of Men
    Sideways
    Adaptation
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Memento
    City of God
    Mullholand Drive
    No Country For Old Men

    • I’m Big Mak, and I approve this list. I loved every movie on your list E-6, except the ones I haven’t seen yet (and both of those are on my short to-see list).

    • You get my vote, Big Mak. What are you running for again?

I originally had Zodiac and Traffic on my list, as well, but I wanted to keep it at 10. (I may flesh this out and post it at my joint as my dozen faves.) The former had a sense of dread that I couldn’t shake for a couple of days, the latter reminded me why Benicio Del Toro is one of my very favorite actors.

    • E’s list is pretty damn good. I have convinced myself to see City of God this weekend. That’s the only one I haven’t seen. I was in a weird place when I saw Mullholand Drive and loved some it (and not just the girl-on-girl action) and thought some of it was just kinda dumb. I should go back and revisit. No Country for Old Men was good, but not great IMHO

Also, Mak, glad to see 21 Grams on your list. That was a very good movie that seemed to get overlooked in the decade in review (including by me). Also takes a better man than I to admit to watching Battlefield: Earth.

I was going to also mention that you seem to have seen a bunch of sequels but not the original (American Pie, Clerks, Dr. Doolittle, Men in Black, Mission: Impossible) but I think some of those came out in the ’90s.

Finally you should add Brokeback Mountain to your list. The guy-on-guy action is tasteful and the story is fantastic and the scenery breathtaking.

    • – ’21 Grams’ and ‘Amores Perros’ were both very good (both by director Alejandro González Iñárritu). I haven’t seen ‘Babel’ (his other one). But he’s got a new one coming sometime in the near future.

      – I didn’t have to pay for ‘Battlefield: Earth’, and my friend and I were the only ones in the theater. Not my proudest moviegoing moment, but at least it was free.

      – I have never seen the original ‘Men in Black’ or the first ‘Dr. Doolittle’.

      – ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is in a group with ‘Doubt’ and ‘Babel’, that is, well-regarded movies that are kind of on my list, but not my top viewing priorities. If I had Netflix, they would all be in the 15-20 range on my queue.
