Game 35 – Minnesota Wild @ Ottawa Senators

MINNESOTA v. OTTAWA

Crazy busy weekend, trying to get holidays planned and shopped for. What’s new with the Wild?

Oh. Their equipment truck caught fire and a lot of the team (including both goalies) lost all their stuff.

Yikes.

I have no idea how they are going to be able to play tonight. Hopefully Ottawa takes it easy on them.

Bold prediction –Wild give up a bunch of goals (let’s say 4), but take this one to overtime.

Story

Outside the insects danced, their movements prescribed by some sonata only they could hear.  I couldn’t shake the feeling that letting you outside into the fully in bloom summer idyll was a mistake. On the other hand, opening a window would allow the flowers to make their presence felt in a house that was currently scentlessApprentice Marvin had worked all night to get the room to this antiseptic state, but it didn’t agree with me.  I opened the windows with a flourish.  You made your break immediately, knocking over the ornament on the sill.  The cunicularial fertility idol (impishly dubbed ‘the hooker with a penis‘ by my more juvenile co-workers) lay in pieces on the floor.  Distracted by trying to get every last piece, I was filling up tissue no. 7 with shards when you surprised me by reappearing in the window.  Of course, as a dutiful feline, you had brought me a present.  The rabbit lay there dead with your teeth marks in the flesh of its neck.  In five minutes of hunting you had absolutely screwed the entire experiment.  I only hoped the other rabbits hadn’t noticed one of their number missing.  I felt those hopes die even before they finished crossing my mind, just outside the window a forest of tiny pitchforks was moving through the yard toward us.  Sensing the danger, you leapt from the window and tried to outrun the fuzzy mob.  They gave you a good chase, but you were able to save yourself by climbing a tree.  You worked your way over to the roof, and, with a little coaxing, down through the sunroof of the van, while our furrious antagonists attemted to pick the lock of the driver’s side door. After tampering with a million-dollar study by tousling these hares, it was time for the two of us to hit the highwayChile is supposed to be wonderful this time of year (not to mention free of revenge-crazed hyperintelligent rabbits).

One more section and we’ll be halfway through the season.  If the next section goes as well as the last two, the Wild may find themselves on the right side of the playoff line (currently 4 points back of 8th-place Detroit).  The amazing thing is that the Wild have managed to go 15-8-3 with only a +3 goal differential.  That’s a lot of wins in close games for Minnesota.  If they can keep that up, it will serve them well in the second half, when everyone tightens up their game a bit, looking for those extra points to keep them close in the playoff race.

The penalty looks kind of bad for these seven games due to the Sedin twins having their way with Josh Harding.  At this point I’m more worried about the power play.  It hasn’t really been consistently effective in almost 20 games.  Combine those two and the power play and penalty kill are almost even over the course of the season.

Game 33 – Minnesota Wild v. Columbus Blue Jackets

MINNESOTA v. COLUMBUS

I commented on Friday that I really hate Western Canada road trips.  Then the Wild went out and played two of their best games so far (40+ shots in both Calgary and Vancouver) and if not for goaltending breaking against them both times (Kiprusoff and Luongo were good, Harding wasn’t), they would have collected 4 points in those games.

Go back and watch the Calgary game – that’s going to be a tough one to beat for game of the year.

Oh yeah, also there’s a game tonight.  The Blue Jackets come to town struggling (2-7-4 in the last 13) and they’re coming off a loss to the Predators last night.  Things are set up pretty well for the Wild.

Bold Prediction – Blue Jackets score first.

(By the way I hope everyone noticed that I got the prediction right on Saturday – directly resulting in a Wild loss.  Never again.)

Snow Chilled and Charcoal Grilled

Back in Minnesota for Thanksgiving, I got a chance to try my hand at homebrewing with my dad.  Due to the massive turkey prep going on in the kitchen, we were banished to the outdoors for the initial boiling and whatnot.

the set-up

I can’t say that I’m going to become a homebrewer on my own, and I probably won’t be joining too many of the WGOM threads on the topics, but it was a lot of fun to get a chance to do this.  Currently the brew is aging in bottles in the basement at home, and I’m trying to work out an excuse to time a trip up to the home country around the time this one comes of age.

the brewing process

master brewer Big Mak

this is perfectly normal (I think)

That’s some good beer (at least it will be soon)

Game 32 – Minnesota Wild @ Vancouver Canucks

MINNESOTA @ VANCOUVER

Last time the Wild traveled to Vancouver they were finishing off a 5-game road trip on which they had already gone 0-4.

This time they are finishing off a 5-game road trip on which they have already gone 3-1 (including a win in Calgary where they had won one of their last 17).  I’m much less fed up this time around.

Bold prediction – The last time Eric Belanger didn’t win at least half of his faceoffs in a game was the Wild’s last visit to Vancouver (a streak of 24 games).  He avenges that tonight, winning 60% of his draws.

Game 31 – Minnesota Wild @ Calgary Flames

MINNESOTA @ CALGARY

Wild in Calgary?  I’m going to hide until this is over.

The Wild come into the game having scored a grand total of one goal in the last two games.  Calgary has been a house of horrors for this team, and the Flames have been the best team in the Northwest so far this season.  The mildly good news is that Calgary hasn’t been dominant at home (8-5 thus far this season – even with Edmonton for worst in the division), so perhaps a glimmer of light there.

Yes, it’s Todd Richards team’s first trip to Calgary, but Kiprussoff and Iginla are still there, which will probably end up haunting the Wild yet again.  I hate Western Canada road trips.

Bold prediction – Iginla scores tonight.

For Rhu_ru:

Story

“Rain just keeps on falling on me, and it ain’t no light shower either.  No sir, this downpour is like a hurricane and it doesn’t matter whether I’m indoors or out.  So you might want to move your fancy book there.”  He gestured at the weathered tome under the arm of the girl next to him at the bar.  Margaret looked at him, perplexed, until a sudden intensification of the downpour onto the man’s already rain-soaked cowboy hat deflected a wave of water at her and sent her scurrying for a safer barstool.  She sat there carefully wiping the drops from the big church on the cover. “The happiest days of our lives are gone” the besodden man continued despite losing his audience, “things aren’t like they used to be, when I could have brought sunshine even to this dreary place.”  The bartender smirked at this, and neither man noticed the reader of the thick volume at the end of the bar was no longer a small blonde girl, if they had looked in that direction they would have seen Margaret in captivity within a dark mass that seemed to be gathering all the light from the already dingy room into itself.  The bartender felt the pull too late, and couldn’t find anything to hold on to as he slid down the bar into the void.  Arms flailing, he yelled for help, “Hey!” “Hey!”  “My My” (into the black went the bartender) “we meet again.” the man, now alone, turned to face the slowly expanding darkness “Thirty-three years later, have you come to remove this curse you placed on me?”  No answer came from the cloud as it enveloped him.

———————————————-

Many years later, in the middle of the desert, in a spot that no one knew there used to be a bar, a man stood considering a cowboy hat that lay at his feet.  He waved his companion over and they both ignored the many potential treasures hidden in this valley of debris, and considered the hat.  One of them spoke, “You know, you’re right.  There’s is no way that should be possible, but that hat is soaking wet.”

Game 27 – Minnesota Wild v. Anaheim Ducks

MINNESOTA v. ANAHEIM

A bit of travel kept me from posting stuff on the last few Wild games, and I’m sure the Wild must have suffered in that absence.  Nonetheless they pulled through with three victories.  I’m beginning to think that perhaps these posts aren’t all that instrumental for the success of this hockey team.

Regardless, I will soldier on.  The Wild have taken advantage of the recent homestand to pull within a single victory of a 1 point per game average.  This game represents the end of the homestand, so it would be good to get one last win before hitting the road again.

Bold Prediction – Seems like every game the Wild play is decided by one goal.  Not tonight, Wild win by three!
