Twins-Royals in Pictures

Made it out to the Twins-Royals game last weekend with the family.  We got there early and checked out the ‘outfield experience’ back where there used to be nothing but fountains.  Still, you immediately know what stadium you’re in when you see this view.

It was a really nice day, which was a good thing because, due to 8 pitching changes (7 of them of the mid-inning variety) we were there for quite a while (game time was at least 3.5 hours).

Soccer Saturday – Sunderland v. Bolton

The English Premier League kicks off today – Sunderland starts off the season with two matches in a week.  They travel to Bolton this morning and then home against Chelsea on Tuesday afternoon.

Well, that was pretty much the ideal start to the season for Sunderland.  New acquisition Darren Bent heads home the first goal of the match in the fifth minute.  One of the issues the Black Cats had last year was holding on to leads (they had the worst record in the Premiership when scoring first last season), so right away they get to work on improving that.

Most of the first half seemed to go Sunderland’s way – they had four corners to Bolton’s zero (until a couple of Bolton corners in the last minutes).  The Black Cats put quite a few shots on, but were unable to extend the lead.

45 minutes down – Sunderland leads 1-0.

Sunderland seems capable of shutting down an attack reasonably well.  Not a whole lot of action in the first 20 minutes of the half on either end.

Here comes the push by Bolton.  10 minutes to go – can the Cats hold on?  Frazier Campbell makes his first appearance for Sunderland, coming on in the 77th minute and then getting a yellow card within 10 minutes.

A close play or two, but Sunderland holds on to get three points in match one of the ’09-’10 season. A win on the road, against a mid-table team, where the lead was held for 85 minutes.  I’d call that a real positive start to the season.

Final –

1 – 0

CONCACAF – U.S. in Mexico tonight

The U.S. soccer squad travels to Mexico for the latest in the World Cup qualifying tournament.  The current standings are like so:

The U.S. defeated Mexico in February at home, but outside of the States standings points have been harder to come by (a draw in El Salvador and a loss in Costa Rica thus far).  Throw in Mexico’s success at home (2-0 including Costa Rica’s only defeat) and this will be a real measuring stick for the U.S.

Match kicks off 3 P.M. here, not sure if I will get a chance to see this one – but I’ll be keeping an eye out for the results.

(Almost) Undefeated Weekend

Describing my state of mind regarding the Twins going into this weekend would only have taken one word: Frustrated.  But starting Saturday I vowed to turn it around.  It wasn’t going to be easy, but I had a five game slate set up guaranteed to reignite my Twins fandom.

Game the First – 1991 World Series, Game 6 (MLB Network – Saturday 11 A.M.)

Showdown (@ Scrawlers)

The flies in the room dropped dead out of the air as he entered. It was curious, having an urban legend confirmed right in front of me and not noticing. He crossed the room, looking rigidly straight ahead, and climbed the rear stairs.

His ascension had diminished his overbearing presence, so my attention returned to our table, observing Alex’s shaking hands and spilled drink. I stopped him as he tried to clean up reminding him he had to watch for trouble.

Climbing the stairs, I heard Alex hastily make his exit. That left only me and the legend.

2007 Beloit Snappers Card Set – Manager and Coaches

In the process of moving I unearthed my collection of Beloit Snappers cards from the past three years, so I’m going to share these over the next few weeks, starting with the managers and coaches from 2007. Jeff Smith is currently the manager of the Twins high-A affiliate at Fort Myers, and Steve Mintz is the pitching coach for the same team. (Click on any card to view the full-size image)

There were also cards for the strength and conditioning coach, the trainer and the hitting coach.  None of them are still with the team this season: Rudy Hernandez is currently coaching at the Twins Gulf Coast League affiliate – I couldn’t find information on the other two gentlemen.
