What’s Next?

I don’t have any kind of system for choosing what I read next, so I thought I’d open this up to the multitudes of regular readers here.  If you have an opinion, let me know.  If you don’t have an opinion, pick one at random.

Kay Ryan is the current National Poet Laureate, August Kleinzahler won the National Book Critics Circle Award this year, and the Philip Schultz book was the other book I was thinking of when I chose the Doty collection.

  1. If you do go for Kleinzahler (my vote), you might want to pick up his memoir too, “Cutty, One Rock.” I’d read the poetry first though because the memoir might put an unwanted spin on your take of the poems.

Interestingly, another author, Nick Flynn, also has a poetry collection (Some Ether) and a memoir (Another Bullshit Night in Suck City). But I would recommend reading his stuff in the opposite order, memoir first, for reasons that will be excruciatingly clear when you do.

Both of these guys are first rate.

    • They’ve both published other stuff too, I should mention. I recently read Flynn’s “Blind Huber,” and am still buzzing from it.
